Love Over Hate

Why can racism be harmful?

-Racism over time can lead to stereotypes, which can lead to prejudice and discrimination. Stereotypes also affect the way we feel and act, and we can have emotional responses such as anxiety.

- Racism can create a social hierarchy where it doesn't just put down the emotions of the targeted group, but also can lead to lower income and less opportunities

-It can hinder people's career progression, which  then also hinders their financial progression and makes it harder for people to support their families

- The stress victims of racism may have to deal with also impacts their physical health. For example, people who face racism more, such as coloured people, who on average tend to have shorter lifespans

-When you experience a certain amount of racism, there becomes a high likelihood of developing PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), which means you may struggle to mentally recover

- It could hurt a victim's feelings, and can lead to anxiety, depression or in the worst cases, suicide

WHY CAN PEOPLE BE DISCRIMINATE?

People can be racist due to a combination of factors. Racism often stems from a misunderstanding or exposure to different cultures, leading to stereotypes and prejudices. These biases can be reinforced by societal structures, cultural norms, or personal experiences, creating a cycle of discrimination. Wanting to feel in power or have influence are also reasons for racism, and peer pressure could also be a reason.

TYPES OF RACISM

Personal Racism

Personal racism are the biased views a person may hold. These include your private beliefs, for example, a police officer assuming a dark-skinned person is a thief when in reality they aren't. Personal racism usually occurs because of stereotypes and due to how other people act towards that targeted race.

Interpersonal Racism

Interpersonal racism is racism that occurs between individuals and is the most common form. Examples include but aren't restricted to are bullying, verbal abuse, physical attacks and more.

Institutional Racism

Institutional racism occurs in places like offices, hospitals, schools and universities. Institutional racism that comes from a person in power towards an employee, for instance a manager and a worker, can affect how much the employee earns and their career progression.

Structural Racism

Structural racism are rules and society opinions that put one race at an advantage over others. An example of this is 'white privilege,' where in some societies European ethnicity people are placed above others.

HOW TO PREVENT AND INTERVENE

How can you intervene when witnessing racism?

If racism is witnessed, it is advised that you report this instantly to support the person being affected by racism. Potential people or authorities to report it to are on the next page. However, if it is a small act of racism such as name-calling, you should try to stand up for the victim if you feel comfortable in doing so. Aiding the victim would help in providing them a sense of support and it keeps them in the right mindset.

How to prevent racism from happening in the first place

The best way to prevent racism from happening is to spread education about it and it's impacts. That itself is the purpose of this website, and by spreading information and educating, you are helping people and the world to become better. Trying to gain exposure to different cultures also is beneficial. Advocating for tougher laws also helps, as this scares people into not committing acts of racism as they could be punished. There are many ways to prevent racism.

WHO CAN YOU CONTACT?

Police

When witnessing racism contacting the police is what most people do and for good reason. Police are the central authority for investigating and punishing these acts. You could go to your local police station or in an emergency call 000. This more so applies to teenagers and young children, but anyone can do this. If you are, for example, witnessing an act of racism in school you could tell a teacher.

For instance, if you are at a sporting event and you see a spectator name-calling someone else and being discriminatory, you could go and tell a security guard.
